"Sound of Silence"

Water pollution is a widespread problem that has imperilled the aquatic environments in our coastal waters. The majority of ocean pollution originates on land, from various contaminants such as chemicals and heavy metals from agricultural, commercial and industrial wastewater carried by streams and rivers straight out to the sea.

Such harmful substances eventually destroy the healthy marine ecosystems creating a chain effect, leading to fish with accumulated high quantities of toxins or to a decreased supply of healthy seafood for human consumption.

It is with high hopes that we all want to have clean water sources, but most of the time, being an environmental advocate can be difficult and even dangerous.

During interviews with some fishermen in the Philippines, we were told stories of how they are scared off when they voice concerns on water pollution caused by factories and commercial establishments to their fishing sites. These big industries are sometimes backed up by big untouchable politicians.

For true and effective change to happen, the top management - being those responsible for creating and implementing policies must be involved in promoting clean water sources and protecting our waterways.

The voices of environmental advocates, reformists and most specially, those who directly use these waters for food sources and livelihood must be heard, and their views understood fully by those in power. All issues with water pollution should be addressed by a concerted effort involving the whole community and with a strong commitment from the government and regulating agencies.
